Certified Divers (Divers who already have their license i.e. PADI, SSI) You guys have some excellent dive boats to choose from. We will jump straight into the best dive sites from Cairns, why they are our best dive sites and which dive boats can visit these sites.

The Best Snorkeling & Diving Sites from Cairns?

You have probably already read allot of forums, but it is true, the outer barrier reefs from Cairns are the best diving reefs. This is mainly due to the close proximity to the continental shelf of Australia. So that means you have very deep blue water from the Coral Sea arriving at the outer barrier reefs. This creates magnificent visibility in the water. With great visibility, you get allot of sunlight penetrating into the water, hence beautiful coral reef systems growing.

With great visibility, you get allot of sunlight penetrating into the water, hence beautiful coral reef systems growing

The other factor is the outer reefs are located a long way away from land, rivers, man-made issues and farming. Some marine scientists believe this attributes to why the outer barrier reef is the healthiest reef systems.

The outer barrier reefs tend to be kept untouched with only a hand full of operators visiting these areas. Trips to these parts of the reef do tend to be a bit more expensive. But this is mainly due to the price of fuel. Boats burn allot more fuel traveling to the outer reefs hence the prices is alway a bit more to get you out there.

Which Dive boats visit the Outer Reefs?

Silverswift Dive & Snorkel visit the outer barrier reefs on a daily basis. Great for certified divers that would like to dive with a guide. All their dives are guided, so this is great for beginner divers or people who wish to be shown around the reefs. They provide full dive gear like BCD, Regulators, Dive Computers, Snorkel Fins, Mask and Wetsuit. Silverswift provide a very professional tight crew and the boat moves around to 3 different moorings in the same day. They are actually the only boat in Cairns to visit 3 different reefs sites in the once day. So great if you want to do 3 dives. All meals are provided morning / afternoon tea and buffet lunch.

TUSA T6 Snorkel & Dive is another dive boat from Cairns that offers 2 reef locations in the one day. TUSA have a very experienced dive crew and would cater more to the experienced diver. All of TUSA dive’s are unguided. So this is fantastic for you and your buddy to team up and explore the reefs by yourself. Not many dive boats in Cairns let you do this. Hence we recommend TUSA to the more experienced divers. TUSA also provide all snorkeling equipment, dive gear, morning / afternoon tea and buffet lunch. TUSA visit 2 reef locations in he one day so you can still do up yo 3 certified dives.

What to expect scuba diving on the Outer Reefs?

The diving is reasonably shallow at around 18meters as you maximum depth. You can expect to find beautiful coral gardens, an abundance of color, many species of coral and reef fish. On the outer walls, you can expect to find white tip and black tip reef sharks sleeping in the sand. In certain areas you can find large schools of juvenile barracuda, bump headed mauri wrasse, walley the Napolean fish. Further up in the shallows you will find giant clams, hawksbill sea turtles, giant trevally and even the odd giant mackerel and giant barracuda hiding in the shadows of the reefs.

Diving the outer reefs from Cairns is a beautiful experience

Diving the outer reefs from Cairns is a beautiful experience, easy to explore reefs systems, easy to navigate and little current. Basically very safe fun diving with lots of color and marines species.

New to Diving and want to try an Introductory Scuba Dive?

If you are new to the sport of scuba diving, you have some great options to try your very first scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Many day boats offer what is called an introductory scuba dive. This small mini dive course consists of a 10-minute learning experience on the back of the dive boat. Here you will learn about your BCD, Snorkel, Fins, Mask and how to breath thru your regulator. You will practice some safety moves and then pretty much jump straight into the water with your instructor.

After spending 10mins or so slowly going down under water, equalizing your ears and practicing your safety skills you will soon be on your way exploring the reef system with your instructor. This part of the intro dive lasts about 40 minutes, exploring all the beautiful coral systems, fish, turtles and amazing underwater scenery.

Which Scuba Diving Day Trips Offer Introductory Scuba Diving?

Silverswift Dive & Snorkel, TUSA T6 Snorkel & Dive, Reef Magic Cruises and Reef Experience all offer first-time introductory scuba diving on The Great Barrier Reef. The only pre-requirement to trying scuba diving for the first time is to make sure you are medically fit with no asthma.

Which Scuba Diving Day Trips offer Snorkeling?

All 19 Cairns reef tour operators offer snorkeling equipment, this is standard with every reef tour company. Snorkeling is the most basic way to explore the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling consists of floating on the surface of the water with a snorkel tube in your mouth. Mask on your face to stop water entering your eyes. Fins on your feet to help move you around the reef system.

Snorkeling is fun, simple and easy to do. Every reef tour operator will teach you how to use your snorkeling equipment. They also provide all safety equipment like pool noodles, life jackets and flotation rings to help you snorkel safely around the reefs.

In Conclusion:

There are many scuba diving Cairns day trips and if you are looking for the best diving available then it pays to go out with a company that takes you to the outer barrier reef systems.

On average you will pay just that little bit more but it is worth it in the end. Especially if you love your diving and really want to see the best of The Great Barrier Reef from Cairns.
