Scuba Dive The Great Barrier Reef Which Boat?

Scuba Dive The Great Barrier Reef Which Boat?

Now you can have that once in a life time experience and Scuba Dive The Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef runs along the North East Coast of Australia, starting up near Papua New Guinea and extending all the way down to Rockhampton in the South East corner of Queensland.

The most convenient way to Scuba Dive The Great Barrier is from the small little tourism town of Cairns. This city has the highest amount of tour boats to choose from, more than any other destination in Australia. So this means there is a lot of competition for your spending money which in turn drives great value day tours with fantastic service. The tour boat companies really do want you to have the very best experience possible, so you will then tell all of your friends.

The upside of this is you can actually choose any of the companies and have great service and equipment. The biggest difference thou is the reef locations the tour boat companies visit. Now I get allot of questions from people asking which are the best reef sites to visit and generally for diving I will tell them the Outer Reefs like Flynn Reef, Milln Reef, Pellowe Reef & Thetford Reef are definitely some of the nicest reefs systems from Cairns.

There are just a couple of day dive boats that go out to this part of the reef system due to the distance they have to travel. Two of the day boats that come to mind are Silverswift Dive & Snorkel, this is a day dive/snorkel boat that travels to 3 outer reef locations in the same day, in fact it is the only day boat in Cairns to do so. All there dives are guided and they offer excellent gear on board. Now the day can be a little rushed due to the fact they need to visit three reef sites in the one day, but this is made up for by the locations them selves. Beautiful coral gardens, around 16 – 18 meter walls and nice little swim thru’s which are like small caves.

The second day boat that visits the outer reef from Cairn sis TUSA T6, now TUSA Dive & Snorkel have been around along time and they have what is called a roaming permit. This means they can choose from around 17 different reef locations on any given day. Now with this ability there skippers can choose the very best reef location for that day based on weather conditions, like tide times, current and wind direction and speed. TUSA are also very lenient when it come to allowing you to dive in buddie pairs by yourself. This is awesome if you are an experienced diver with allot of dives under your belt, the freedom this gives you is fantastic.

Another option to try and Scuba Dive The Great Barrier Reef is to go from Port Douglas, this is a small 5 star resort town located about 80 klm to the North from Cairns. There is a good reason to dive from Port Douglas and that is the possibility of visiting the Agincourt Outer Reef Systems. Now in general the Agincourt reefs are deeper walled reefs then in Cairns and that means you can push about 25 meters on your dives on some of these outer reef walls, as long as this is within your dive capabilities and license.

There are also 2 boats that stand out when thinking about taking a day scuba dive trip from Port Douglas and they are Silversonic Dive &  Snorkel and Poseidon Dive & Snorkel. Now both of these boats both travel to 3 Outer Reef sites on a daily basis, so both offer fantastic diving capabilities. I will talk a little more about diving from Port Douglas in the next edition of Cairns Tourism News.
