First Why should I try Skydiving in Cairns?

First of all, I like to try and remind people of what their first experience in an aeroplane was like. Remember kids skydiving is all about jumping out of an aeroplane at 14,000ft!

Remember when you were a child and you took your first aeroplane flight. The air hostess, usually an attractive young thing, she speaks over the microphone.

“Everyone please fasten your seat belt. Oxygen masks will drop down if we run into any problems.  Please remember the brace position if we have any issues. Please sit down and enjoy the rest of your flight.”

This is usually when you felt a bit nervous, butterflies in your stomach. But once the plane takes off all is well and you relax and fall asleep listening to music. There is often a crappy movie on the little TV screen in front of you. Maybe Die Hard or Point break they had some great skydiving scenes.

Anyway fast forward a few years and now you are thinking about jumping out of an aeroplane at 14,000ft! Are you mad? Or maybe now you are the adrenalin, junkie it’s now your time to live your dreams.

Is Cairns The Adventure Capital of Australia?

Many travellers arrive in Cairns, and to their surprise find a huge amount of things to see and do.

The number one thing to see and do in Cairns is visit the Great Barrier Reef. You can do this with one of the many dive & snorkel tours that operate on a daily basis. View all the different Cairns Snorkel & Dive Tours.

But one of the most famous adrenalin pumping activities in Cairns is…… skydiving! That’s right jumping out of a plane at 14,000ft is about as extreme as it gets!

Why is skydiving in Cairns so famous?

Number-01: When you skydive in Cairns you have unparallel spectacular scenery. Scenery that you cannot experience anywhere else in Australia.

Number-02: You have The Great Barrier Reef located just 26klm offshore from Cairns. So that means on a clear day you can see the islands and inshore reef systems from your jump altitude of 14.000ft.

In conclusion, you have magnificent mountain ranges to the West of Cairns. Fantastic views out to the Great Barrier Reef in the East. Last but not least you have beautiful warm tropical weather. Blue skies and perfect conditions for Skydiving.

What’s the best time of year to Skydive in Cairns?

You can skydive all year round. April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December are perfect for skydiving.

January, February, March is our wet season. So you can still skydive but jumps can get held up or delayed due to low cloud and heavy rain.

But the skydive companies still manage to get planes up in the sky thru the gaps in the clouds. So you can still skydive during the wet season.

We recommend to allow some waiting time, perhaps have or a backup day that you could change too if your skydive was delayed or cancelled due to weather.

Tell me the price How Much Does it Cost to Skydive in Cairns?

At 14,000ft a Tandem Skydive in Cairns Cost  – $270 + $25 levy.

This includes a bus pick up and drop off at your hotel / hostel. A 20 min training session on the ground with your instructor.

A 30min Aeroplane flight to get you up to 14,000ft. A 60-second FREEFALL and around a 5-minute parachute ride before coming down to land.

How does it work Skydiving Cairns?

Once the aeroplane is at altitude or on the jump run as it’s known in skydive terms. The green door light comes on and the door opens!

It’s at this moment the poo poo valve tightens!

It’s a bit noisy and there is allot of wind. The aeroplane you are in is travelling at 250klm.

Keep in mind you might also be emitting a little wind, but don’t worry this is normal when your body feels like you are faced with an extreme moment in life!

To give you an idea of the wind speed the aeroplane is traveling at. Have you ever put your arm out the window of a car when you were a kid?

It feels exactly like that.

On the count of two your out the door. Don’t count to three you will be already out the door and into freefall by then.

What is the best Body Fly Position for safe Skydiving:

In general it’s the shape of a banana. Arch your back, keep your chin up, this helps you to arch your back. Use your belly as the point of the triangle.

A nice arched back with your chin up creates a great body fly position. Just relax your arms and legs. Don’t fight the wind just go with it.

When does the Parachute Open?

It takes over 60 seconds to fall from 14,000ft down to 5,000ft.

It’s at this 5,000ft mark you tandem instructor will open the parachute. Get ready for a slight jolt and a little bit of swinging around. But soon enough this is over.

Opening the chute at 5000ft gives plenty of time for the parachute to open. It is also a good height for your instructor to adjust and tweak the chute as necessary.

Once the chute opens you will feel your harness pull you up into a vertical position and you slow right down.

Now you can relax you are under canopy. Open your eyes and enjoy the magnificent views of Cairns. Look out to the East and enjoy The Great Barrier Reef. Look out to the West to the surrounding Great Dividing Mountain Ranges.

This is what skydiving in Cairns is all about. Magnificent natural views of The Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage listed Rainforests.

Can I get Video & Photos from my Skydive?

Yes of course, all Cairns Skydive companies offer handi-cam video and photo options. They also offer 3rd party Video & Photos options. This a third person solo skydiver filming you and your instructor together.
