Barrier Reef

What is the barrier reef? A long narrow coral reef near and lying parallel to the shore, separated from it by deep water in this case the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Stretching some 2800 klm down the east coast of Australia. The Great Barrier Reef starts up in the Torres Strait Islands and travels all the way down the East Coast of Australia to the small township of Bundaberg.

An abundance of marine corals and thousands of different fish species the Great Barrier Reef is pertinent to the survival of thousands of marine animals that rely on this Eco system to survive.

The Australian tourism industry relies heavily on this famous iconic marine mass to help bring throngs of tourist from all over the globe wanting to catch a glimpse of the worlds biggest marine park.

Backpackers and travelers from all ages and all continents on Earth travel to Cairns in Australia to have the opportunity to immerse them selves in the clear warm tropical waters, snorkeling and diving this magnificent marine world.

As the worlds largest marine collective made up of literally thousands of smaller reefs the Great Barrier Reef is a living breathing organism that humans are still only at the early stages of learning about.

University Marine Science departments from around the world come to Cairns and work with the local James Cook University campus to enrich there knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef.

Uniquely working with the tourism industry the Great Barrier Reef marine park authority was set up to help manage this huge eco system. Working with the local tour operators, the University, local councils and water treatment and land management authorities it is helping to manage and sustain this natural wonder.

The city of Cairns is classed as the main tourism hub for people wanting to visit the Great Barrier Reef. There are a few other locations on the East coast but no other can match the quality and variety of reef tour operators that operate out of both Cairns and the sleepy town of Port Douglas.
